Teaching Assistant
Prior to entering the Bachelor of Education program at Thompson Rivers University, I completed volunteer work within several elementary school classrooms. My energy when volunteering was primarily directed towards student literacy, including reading with individual students and leading Heggerty phonemic awareness with the class. I intentionally took initiative when volunteering, supplying math and literacy games for the classroom. I supported teachers in other capacities as requested, such as prep work, cleanup, and filing. My time assisting teachers in a volunteer capacity was an invaluable experience for me. It provided me with insights into classroom management, student behaviour, the importance of time management and planning, and how different teachers structure their day to maximize cross-curricular learning and incorporation of assessment opportunities.
Getting Outside
I have also completed outdoor volunteering with children including acting as a lunch monitor and assisting with the Nancy Green Ski Festival. My responsibilities as a lunch supervision of students to including helping students stay physically safe, socially responsible, and meet behavioural expectations. While volunteering at the ski festival, I also had similar responsibilities to ensure children on the mountain were in situations where they were safe physically and emotionally. It is so important for children to be able to explore and discover outside in capacities that eliminate unnecessary risks. I was privileged to be in a position where I could facilitate this as it reminded me of the importance of keeping kids active and inquisitive.
Articling Agrologist Coordinator
During my tenure as a Professional Agrologist, I held the executive position as the Articling Agrologist Coordinator. The responsibilities of this position included assisting prospective members of the British Columbia Institute of Agrologists in achieving articling requirements. I also organized opportunities for ethical or professional training, socializing, and connecting new members with mentors. I ensured new members had a welcoming and inclusive experience. As a teacher candidate developing relationships with faculty and teacher mentors, I understand how important support within a professional body is. I have been fortunate to experience support thus far in my transition into education and am grateful I have previously been able to help new professionals in a similar capacity.
