Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action
In 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada addressed what is arguably the darkest chapter of this nation’s history. A responsive report was issued consisting of 94 Calls to Action. These calls are relevant to every Canadian, regardless of career, status, or race. Education facilitators have a specific responsibility to consider Calls to Action 62 through 65, which address actions relevant to elementary, secondary and post-secondary education. Teachers have an ethical duty to familiarize themselves with these proposed actions and reflect upon how they will incorporate them in their own teaching philosophies and embody the fundamental principles of them daily. We also have a responsibility to safely educate young Canadians on this wicked history and the continuing impact of colonizers, while also providing an understanding of the hope that reconciliation offers.
