Although the Professional Standards for BC educators are summarized into nine points or categories, each of these categories has many complex and important implications within them. From fostering public confidence to supporting reconciliation, they guide teachers on what appropriate conduct looks like in education today. The standards are in place to protect students and the larger community. They are the fundamental ethical expectations that teachers must embody, not suggestions that can be disregarded. Educating the most impressionable and vulnerable citizens of our society requires teachers to examen themselves, their pedagogy, and their intentions through a lens constructed by these standards. Teachers must continually reflect on their learning journey and assess how they align, embody, and support these values.
