Pleased to Meet You!

Weytk! Krystal Devick ren skwekwst. I am pleased to introduce myself with the following biography detailing why I am an excellent human 🙂

Family & Lifestyle

I grew up in the Okanagan and moved to the Kamloops area eight years ago. I am grateful to live on, and be sustained by, this beautiful land within the Secwepemc Nation. My family lives on a multi-generational ranch north of Kamloops where I am able to indulge in my passions for music (piano in particular), hiking, sports and equestrianism. I have always found myself naturally drawn to, and comfortable with young children, and now I am fortunate to be a mother. I have three children young, who have kindly taught me the true meaning of patience. My capacity for empathy and compassion flourished exponentially through my journey into parenthood, and continue to expand as I strive to shape positive internal voices for my children.

Professional Achievements

I graduated in 2012 from UBCO with a Bachelors in Earth and Environmental Science. I subsequently worked as an environmental consultant and received my designation as a Professional Agrologist. Working in this capacity for over ten years provided me with the opportunity to develop many transferrable skills, such as organization, management competence, and time management. My experience working collegially with peers, and addressing the intricate regulatory requirements of clients, allowed me to refine constructive communication and productive collaboration strategies. Achieving and maintaining designation as a member of a professional regulatory body required a commitment to professional development, upholding ethical obligations to the public, and working towards reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples.

Education Transition

I am currently completing my first year of the Bachelor of Education (Elementary) degree at Thompson Rivers University. Not only have I achieved a 4.33 GPA thus far, but I have received very positive feedback from both my teacher and faculty mentors while working in classrooms. Having the privilege of working in schools over the last couple years has shown me just how well-suited I am to work with young children. My spark of interest in teaching has been kindled into a passion. My gentle and fun demeanor allows me to quickly build relationships with students. I intend to support student well-being, equity, inclusion, and interconnectedness in every capacity I am able. I see my future classroom as one that practices kindness and is a safe space for everyone. My intention is to promote an atmosphere that is inclusive and supportive, with clear and attainable expectations and boundaries. I will encourage students to seek support not only from myself, but amongst each other. My classroom will be one where discussions and rational thought are always encouraged. When I teach, I will not only instruct, but also learn, connect, and embody the ethical standards expected of teachers. I am determined to meet the needs of each child under my tutelage, fostering both social and academic growth. I understand the profound responsibility an elementary teacher has. I take this responsibility that I will incur with the utmost seriousness. I am excited by the prospect of teaching and look forward to a lifetime of reciprocal learning.
